The Pros and Cons of DIY Car Repairs

Doing auto repairs yourself will save you money because you only pay for the parts and not the labor.

Consider the following pros and cons when debating whether to take your car to a professional auto repair shop or repair it yourself.

Doing minor repairs yourself, like fixing dents or changing tires may be better than attempting more complicated repairs like fixing the brakes or transmission which can take a long time if you're not a professional. Auto repair shops can handle more complex repairs easily and professionally.

Consider how much your time is worth. If you're crunched for time or have a lot of commitments, taking the car to a repair shop may be the only option. Consider the cost of the tools you need to complete the repairs properly as well.

Some drivers enjoy doing car repairs and maintenance themselves but if you consider it a daunting chore, you're less likely to put the time and effort in to do the repairs properly which can be risky.

If a repair is done improperly, you could be putting yourself and your passengers in danger especially if the repair involves essential safety features like the brakes. You assume the liability for any damages caused if you do the repair job improperly, whereas if an auto repair shop does the repairs incorrectly, they can be held liable for the damages caused by the malfunction.

Safety should be your number on concern. So if you feel like the repairs are too much for you to take on or too risky, you should probably take your car to the shop. Think about your safety and the safety of others in your car and on the road with you.

When you take your car to a reputable auto shop you have the assurance that the job is going to be done right. If it isn't done right, you can always take it back to have it repaired correctly. The best auto repair shops will guarantee their work. So if you have the option, choose one of those even if it costs a bit more it could save you money in the long run.

Most states require shops to follow warranty guidelines. Under the guidelines, an auto repair shop must correct any repair that isn't done right the first time, free of charge. If you do the repairs yourself there is no recourse if the job isn't done right or the repair doesn't last.

If you know what needs to be repaired and you want to save money but are not confident enough with your abilities to do it yourself, consider going to the nearest junk yard and buying used car parts for the same make and model of your car. You can often find used transmissions and used tires from Junk Cars that can be reused. If all else fails and your car has reached the end of its useful life you can always take it to your local junkyard or Donate Your Car To Charity.

My name is Jules and I am a car aficionado! My brothers and I are all in the automobile industry in some way because auto repair goes back a few generations in our family. I have had many junk cars over the years that I have fixed up by starting with some Used Auto Parts and a lot of elbow grease.

I cant and want be gracious my girl hid 10thousand from me. Its about trust not the $ I ask her why she hid
Money well rather lied about it.Its not like I need her money. But we do share a household and live as a married couple and we share everythhing from the bills of the house down to the auto car repairs, etc. And it done been times when she really has been out of work and I HAVe took care of all the bills for months and didnt complain and bought her clothes and anything else she needed. And when she do get on her feet she lies about her income. And she has been lying to me for over a year and its not like she was saving this money for us and she its not like she was helping pay for more of the bills.she walked around here like she was tight on funds.and she doesnt only have 10gs thats only part of it but thats the only part I didnt know about. I just feel llike I cant trust her, i also feel like everything she do she's up to know good. And I just thinks she will hide anything from me or she will do anything and deceive me because she can and have and shes good at lying and acting because she held up a charade and act like she was living paycheck to paycheck.I'm feeling sorry for her so I footing most of the bills because Im think she tight for cash. When I found out all she can say is that she though I was hiding money some where.I think she had other motives but if that is the case i just feel like if she thought i WAS cheating she would cheat. Its just dont make since to me.We argue everyday and night.even if we get along the whole day we arguing at night over little stuff.this was going on before I found out about the money. When I found out she even went as far to saying the bank made a error and then when I showed her I had proof her statement she lied and said it was her mom money and her mom even lied to me for her.until more investigation led to it was her money. Now she want to work it out but I just feel so different and dont trust her right now. I think its over what do you guys and ladies think about this?I KNOW ITS LONG BUT I HAD TO EXPLAIN AND MAKE SURE YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND AND PLUS I HAVE NO ONE TO TALK TO LOL;(

How do I file a complaint against a business (auto/cars repair)?
Recently, My car stopped working and Triple A said that i had a faulty battery which had to be replaced. I took it to the Auto shop and they said that the alternator was bad, They said i wouldn't be able to Drive back home until it was changed. I paid $416 ($300 for alternator). As i was driving home the Gages wouldn't work, the lights wouldn't turn on, the next day car wouldn't start either so i called them and they wouldn't take responsibility, They would ignore the call and hung up on me. The car is 2001 2.0L Ford Focus. What should i do?
