How To Determine If A Car Warranty Is Worth Your Money

Determining whether or not you need to purchase an extended warranty for your vehicle may seem like a difficult choice. While many dealerships use pressure-tactics to convince you that you must buy a warranty, the choice is completely up to you. There are many different reasons why you should and shouldn't buy a warranty, however, each of these reasons is completely unique depending on the car buyer. The number one rule in buying an extended warranty is to ensure that you never feel pressured into buying one. Take the night after you find your perfect car, and determine whether or not you need to purchase the warranty.

The first step to understanding whether or not you need an extended warranty is to think of a warranty as an extra insurance policy for your car, except this insurance policy is for repairs and other unforeseen events.

If you are planning to purchase a used car, make sure that you gain access to all papers that detail the type of damage and repairs that have previously been done on the vehicle. This will determine what major problems you may encounter with your vehicle, and thus you can read the warranty policies to ensure that the warranty covers these problems. If you are buying a new car, than you will need to read other consumer reports and publications that offer car buyers information on major problems this particular car model has had in the past.

The next step in determining the worth of your extended warranty is to think about how long you are going to keep the car. If you are leasing a vehicle, you will most likely not have the car for very long, and thus the warranty may not be as important. However, if you are buying the vehicle, and you plan on keeping it for longer than three years, than you will want to purchase an extended warranty, especially if you plan on putting a lot of miles on the car.

There are many companies that sell extended auto warranties. You do not have to purchase the warranty that the dealership is pushing on you. Visit various warranty companies and receive a quote from them, asking them what the deductible for your vehicle will be. You will find that there are three major types of extended auto warranties. The most common warranty is the bumper-to-bumper, which is the perfect warranty if you have a vehicle that has anti-lock brakes or an internal computer system. Make sure that your extended warranty covers the basics of your car, including: paint, the battery, headlights/taillights, tires, glass and the exhaust system. Always read the fine print of the coverage policy.
