Should I buy a car from a Car Dealer or a Private Individual?

Any potential buyer of used cars will always be torn between buying their dream car from a large-scale car dealer and buying it from private individuals. Thus, this article will explain to the readers the pros and cons of each option, with a detailed explanation of each point.

The Professional Car Dealer

The car dealer is often the one who is consulted when someone is interested in buying a used car. This is very true especially when someone is not very familiar with private second hand car sales. By visiting a professional car dealer shop, a potential buyer can inspect a wide array of cars to choose from. This makes it easier for the buyer because multiple visits to different private sellers can become costly and time consuming.

Furthermore, a lot of people feel more comfortable at dealing with car dealers because they feel that their dealers are more trustworthy than private individuals. Since professional car dealers sell cars for a living, many believe that dealers are in a better position to practice integrity with their affairs. This leads more than just a few people to approach car dealers should they need to buy a new used car.

However, there are many instances where this does not hold true. For example, the Automobile Protection Association of Canada (APA) , a not-for-profit organization that monitors car sellers for unscrupulous practices, have identified a large number of car dealers who willingly conceal disparaging information about the cars that they sell.

In one particular instance, a used car had nothing but 80, 000 miles on it was sold at an unusually low price, even if the car purportedly had zero accidents, zero repairs, zero whatsoever. After careful inspection, APA was found out that it was actually involved in a massive collision with another car just a few months prior.

On the contrary, there is a small class of professional car dealers that are virtually exempt from this exemption. These car dealers, instead of being stand-alone companies, are affiliated with a particular car manufacturer like Toyota, Chrysler or Ford. These car dealers usually sell cars that were traded in for a higher model, or were repossessed due to failure to pay.

These cars are usually certified as pre-owned and in good condition. More often than not, these are vehicles that can be trusted as safe and in good working condition. Of course, the exercise of due diligence is still important just to be on the safe side.

The Private Individual

On the other hand, there are also some people who prefer to deal with private individuals. These people deal with private individuals for several reasons: a potentially lower selling price, a more personal touch, and a more comprehensive explanation of the car's background.

Since deals are made directly from person to person, the vehicle's price will usually be set at the lowest amount possible. This happens because there is a greater opportunity of lowering the final price through haggling, and also because there is no extra markup cost incurred, something that is a staple when a car is bought from a professional car dealer.

Some people also value the more personal approach that is connected with such transactions. Some people love to learn the history of the car and all the stuff that happened to it.
Furthermore, many buyers prefer to deal with private individuals because they are better able to explain the various details of the car, since they are the original owners of the car to begin with. Some professional dealers tend to sanitize the details regarding the car so as not to scare off the potential buyer. On the other hand, a private individual is better disposed at saying the truth, owing to his lack of experience.

The one draw back that a private individual can not provide are any warranties, or quarantees. In the event that there are issues with the car, taking it back and having the owner fix it, is not going to happen. However, car dealerships with integrity will stand behind their vehicles and will work towards a solution that works in the new car owners best interest.
