Federal Citizen Information Center Releases Latest Scams
The Federal Citizen Information Center out of Pueblo, Colorado, has sent out a direct warning on current scams that consumers need to watch for.
The Better Business Bureau reports that a company, US Fidelis, based out of Missouri, has been the subject of 33, 000 inquiries and 12, 000 complaints during the last three years. US Fidelis is an extended auto warranty company. Complaints are numerous. Investigations have revealed that the number of complaints alone is astounding. Us Fidelis is accused of rude customer sales people, failure to provide coverage contracts, rude customer service people, failure to pay for covered services and leaving customers saddled with thousands of dollars of repairs after paying thousands of dollars of premiums. Several States' Attorney General Offices are now involved. Tidewater Marketing out of Florida has been sued for deceptive practices. It has been running a free gas scam through car dealers. People would buy a new car prompted in part by a free gas offer. Supposedly all they had to do was pay a $5 fee and then turn their gas receipts in as they used them. It was a scam. Tidewater Marketing is in trouble. One known area of activity was Las Vegas. Elisabeth Leamy of ABC News reports on the fact that odometer fraud has risen over the last four years. It is expected to go up again this year. The reason that fraud is expected to rise is that there are way more leasing cars expected to be sold this year and those are the cars most subject to odometer rollback. The Insurance Information Institute has come out on a timely basis about car rentals. There is a question about your needs for some of their "option" insurance coverage. Also sometimes rental car insurance companies include various fees that you aren't told about. It is best when renting a car to talk to your insurance agent and your credit card company about what to do for insuring a rental car. The scam information released was about the auto industry and related issues. You can read them all at the linked site from Pueblo. I have one to give you from personal experience. Don't buy gas and pay for it at the pump with your debit card. For some reason the same problem doesn't seem to occur with credit cards. However I bought $15 worth of gas. A week later I went to pay a bill over the phone and my card wouldn't clear the amount. The station had put a hold for $150. Apparently the standard hold was $75 but they had double-entered the card. It took me a long time to get that hold taken off. (How many of us keep receipts for $15 worth of gas?) Summer is a time that many of us get involved with cars on one basis or another. It is a good idea to be very careful because obviously there are a lot of scams.
