One Driver Won't Buy A GM Import From China

Last Friday I had a phone conversation with my mother. I told her about the car trouble I had and how I wanted to trade my car off because I didn't like paying for repairs. My car is out of warranty and since it's a hybrid all repairs seem to be expensive. It also doesn't help that the car is a Honda; Hondas are usually pretty expensive to fix anyways.

My mom and I had a dialogue about trading a car in. I know there's always been tension because I drive two Japanese vehicles - a Honda and a Toyota. Since my family has deep roots in GM it's always been sort of that thing no one talks about. Every time I go home I know my car gets evil stares from my family and extended family. That's why I usually fly.

I told my mom that the only GM cars that I liked were Saturns, and I didn't want to buy a Saturn because I was afraid they would go under. What my mother said to me next surprised me.

"I don't blame you. You know, GM is going to start importing cars from China. I wouldn't buy a GM car if I were you either."

I was speechless. I immediately tried to find a news article online that confirmed her statement. I didn't immediately but I came across an interesting article this morning. Automotive News reported that GM could export three small car models from China to the US. The Aveo, Lovo, and Spark.

You couldn't pay me to buy an Aveo. I drove an Aveo one time when I rented an economy car (because I am cheap) and my back flared up so bad from the car that I spent more money going to the chiropractor realigning my spine than I would have if I would have just sprang for a normal sized vehicle.

This news is disturbing. While exporting cars from China may bring affordable new cars to the market, exporting GM cars from China to the US seems almost like an act of treason. In an age where the whole state of Michigan is crumbling, and hundreds of thousands of people are left without work - we may have cheap small cars from China made by one of our nations former giants.

I am not going to buy a GM car now. I'm sorry. I will buy Japanese or German any day of the week over a company who has almost single handedly ruined an entire economy. At least when someone buys a Japanese or a German car they aren't doing so in order to save a quick buck. Many of these vehicles are just as expensive - if not more so - than their American counterparts. Chinese car sales, however, would be driven primarily by cost savings.

In addition to the article from Automotive News, the Washington Post also published an article which shows that while we are struggling here in the US, China is having good times. Some companies in China are eyeing Hummer and Saturn.

Now how would you like to buy a $40, 000 Hummer, only to find the ubiquitous "Made in China" sticker proudly stamped across the back? I didn't think so.

It's news stories like this that make me wish that I lived back in the days where my grandparents grew up. Days where everything was Made in America, and corporations main concern was making a quality product and taking care of their employees. If we went back to those days, and stopped buying goods from China, slowly but surely the great industrial engine that is the US would start churning again.

Unfortunately, that's easier said than done.

Why Is Rick Wagoner Fired and Nancy Pelosi Still Working?
Apparently, it's OK for Obama to fire the head of General Motors, but Bush can't fire his own U.S. attorneys. It is generally agreed that the Obama administration's demand that Rick Wagoner resign as chairman of General Motors is the price of GM's accepting government money. To promote the sales of GM vehicles, Obama says the government will stand by your GM car warranty. And all the taxpayers will get a lube job. The new GM owner's manual will come with a disclaimer: "Close enough for government work." Now that we're all agreed that the government can make hiring and firing decisions based on infusions of taxpayer money, I can think of a lot more government beneficiaries who are badly in need of firing. Just off the top of my head, how about Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and everybody at the Department of Education? How about firing all the former Weathermen, like Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn and Mark Rudd, whose university salaries are subsidized by the taxpayer? When will the American people stop listening to all the rubbish, and push for the REAL reason of the meltdown. The government is steering the issue everywhere but at it's own doorstep! az-elected officials can be fired, or impeached. If the government can fire someone working at a private business, does'nt that scare you? The union boss is just as much or more at fault, why not fire him?

Nearly every university in the country accepts government money. Is there any industry in America more in need of some "restructuring" than academia? What's Berkeley's "business plan" to stop turning out graduates who hate America? And what is Obama's justification for keeping Shirley M. Tilghman as president of Princeton University as long as Princeton employs prominent crackpot Peter Singer?
