When A Major Appliance Needs Repair

Kitchen ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers, and built-in microwave ovens are all considered Major Appliances. The cost to repair such an appliance is far less than the replacement cost, unlike toasters, blenders, or other small appliances that can usually be bought for under $50.

Most Major Appliances have warranties that last for several years-sometimes as much as seven to ten years. If they do not have warranties, a maintenance agreement can be bought at the time of purchase, for just a small amount more.

When one considers that one repair may run $200, including parts and labor, the $250 or so that is paid for a maintenance agreement is a good investment. This is particularly true when the maintenance agreements are for three or more years.

However, if no maintenance agreement exists, and a major appliance does need repairing, it is best to call the Service Center of the company that manufactured the unit (GE Service Center for a GE appliance; Maytag Service Center for a Maytag appliance, etc.) These places usually have their own repair staff, or they contract with an appliance repair business in the homeowner's area to fix their product.

Either way, the parts will be replaced with name-brand parts, rather than "aftermarket" or off-brand parts. There are reputable, capable independent appliance repair companies that do service all makes and models of Major Appliances. One may wish to call the manufacturer service center and a trustworthy independent company and compare prices.

If the independent contractor is cheaper, and uses the proper parts, then the homeowner can certainly go that route. If, however, the homeowner is unsure that the work will be done right, using the right equipment, it may be.

Lost snake. in need of major help?
My girlfriends ball python, mona (2ft long), has been missing for a few days. Through research I've come to realize my house is a paradise for lost snakes. The furnace heats the house with pipes run along virtually every wall leaving mona sized holes inbetween rooms. It is a 4 bedroom single story house with all rooms college students(clothes piles being the problem). Fortunately its Christmas and everyone is gone(girlfriend included) so I can turn the heat down. I'm sure I have the same standard level of panic as any other first time snake loser but it is sooo important to us to find our lovely mona. To really sum it up its 2am Christmas morning and I'm all alone in the coldest house in south Dakota looking for our baby. Any help would be awesome. If I could find her by the time my gf gets home it would be he ultimate Christmas present. That being said any quick suggestions for answers or if someone could get in touch with me via email (chrisbontje@gmail.com) would be more than appreciated. My current setup is as follows: No heater No laundry appliances No pilot lights on the stove Only major appliance on overnight is the fridge I set up folded electric blankets near the holes between rooms which are checked twice a night her tank is in a corner of the room with a garage heater aimed right at it. I have put a mouse in her tank also. This is going constantly. All appliances (even if turned off) are checked in the morning and evening. I'm not worried about her finding her way outside. I don't even want to go outside in this rapid city winter. Please contact me however you can. Even if its after next week.

Howcome after 5 minutes of using a portable heater, the power goes out?
I have had the same portable heater for over a year and it has worked great. However, the last several times I have tried to use it, the power has gone out after about 5 minutes of use. I have no new major appliances, and every thing in my home has been the same for over a year. Any idea on why the power goes out after 5 minutes of use? Any solutions? I would like to use the portable heater, but it is frustrating when everything all of a sudden turns off. Thank you! @ Bryce - you mean to clean the portable heater? I have noticed there is a lot of dust inside. @ Rachelle - I have tried several different sockets. All with the same results. I have even tried the portable heater on a lower setting. No luck.
