Extended Auto Warranties 101
It's sometimes hard to figure out and understand how most car warranties work. An extended car warranty is an important factor to consider especially if your car is used or outside factory coverage. This is usually at 36K miles or 3 years, what ever comes 1st. However some manufacturers warranty can cover the powertrain for up to 10 years.
In our current car buying market, extended car warranties are a must have, especially if you could not afford an expensive repair bill. Some aftermarket warranties cover as much as bumper-to-bumper along with roadside assistance. You will want to go over every portion of the warranty policy with the seller. All warranty plans are different and depend mainly on who is supplying the service. Some cover things that others don't. It is also a good idea to make sure the Auto Warranty company that you are going with is a legit company and will pay out on parts and labor when that day comes. Read over the contract very carefully. Most policies give you a 30 day review period to back out. As well most policies have a 30 day 1000 mile waiting period to file any claims. There are two types of extended car warranties for used cars and vehicles approaching the end of the factory coverage. The first is a manufacturer Backed Car Extended Warranty which is an extension of the factory warranty. These plans are very expensive and usually only for another year or 2 after the factory coverage expires. They also have interest on the cost of the Warranty. The other alternative and most popular choice is from a Vehicle Service Contract provider like National Warranty Services Inc, Car Service Contract.com, Don't Pay Car Bills.com or US Direct Protect, just to name a few. These policies are backed by A rated insurance carriers and most important are interest free and can paid off in 12 or 18 months making it easy to fit into one's budget.
Some things to keep in mind when you are considering your car extended warranty are things like mileage, how old the car is that you are purchasing and how long you plan to keep the vehicle. Older cars are expensive to cover under a warranty and high mileage cars are also fairly expensive do to the fact that there is a very high likely hood of claims being made. A lot of times, the buyer will not see the worth of having an extended warranty until there sitting on the side of the road with no clue how there getting to work the next day. Remember also that most friends and family that tell you extended coverage is a bad idea will most likely not lend you the money when the time comes to pay the dealership or repair facility the huge repair bill.
