Should I Buy An Extended Warranty

Good Reasons To Buy An Extended Warranty

The decision to buy an extended product warranty is not always easy, in fact, it can require more thought than one might assume. One one hand, you never know if what you just bought is going to last as long as it should. On the other hand, you may have purchased a fantastic product that will out live you. Get the warranty and you may not need it, don't get the warranty and the item you purchased was made on a bad day at the factory. You can't win, but at least you can make the odds swing a little in your favor, if you use your head.

Begin with examining what motivates your personal purchases, aside from necessity. Purchasing the least expensive product that "will do" is not always a good approach to consumerism. Remember all those people that bought Hugo cars about 20 years ago? Inexpensive price, great fuel mileage, usefulness of a pet rock. Going cheap on a purchase is fine in disposable products - ink pens, shoe laces, a writing tablet, etc., if they turn out to be junk toss them and get another. Any purchase that is not disposable or is demanded by budget to last for a long period should be of quality and have an extended warranty.

Big ticket items purchased should always have the option of buying an extended warranty, and the consumer should take the extended warranty without hesitation. This includes home appliances, automobiles, expensive electronics, and even pet health insurance. Anything that can devastate your savings in a single incident that can be avoided should be guarded against. The foolish notion that every purchase is a good one should be discounted from the start. The overall quality of items manufactured today couldn't hold a candle to those of past generations, and a smart consumer today should expect the worst and buy an extended warranty when applicable.

Good reasons to buy an extended warranty includes considering who the purchase is for, in terms of use and age. A gift bought for your depression-baby Grandmother will most likely be guarded, cherished and well cared for after she receives it. A gift for your 13 year old would have a much higher risk of abuse, therefore it would be prudent to take out an extended warranty. In fact anything for anyone under the age of 30 probably should have an extended warranty.

The last consideration in buying an extended warranty is your personal financial situation. Although what is thought to be the smart and proper thing to do, an extended warranty may come down to the fact you just cannot afford it. If this is the case, shrug your shoulders, say a prayer and hope for the best.
