The Xbox 360 can be subject to a number of technical problems. Since the console's release in 2005, the product earned note in the press questioning its reliability and failure rate of the early consoles. To aid customers with defective consoles, Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360's manufacturer's warranty to three years for general failure errors. "General Hardware Failure" is recognized by three adjacent quadrants of the ring flashing red. This error is often known as the "Red Ring of Death". Since these problems surfaced, design modifications have been made to the console to improve reliability. All consoles manufactured after June 2007 have extensive revisions from the earliest units. Microsoft Corp. today announced the Auto PC, the latest member of its PC Companion line of products powered by the Microsoft® Windows® CE operating system version 2.0, bringing the benefits of interactive speech technology, connectivity, information on demand and enhanced entertainment to the automobile. Microsoft plans to deliver the Auto PC software to OEMs in the first quarter of 1998. Microsoft is pioneering the use of speech recognition in automobiles with the sophisticated but simple interactive speech-technology user interface, enabling the Auto PC to respond to oral commands and using speech synthesis to communicate information to drivers. Optimized for the requirements of the automotive market, the Auto PC with interactive speech technology allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. "Much as happened with the Windows graphical user interface on the desktop, we anticipate Microsoft's pioneering use of interactive speech technology will become widely accepted as the primary way of interacting with automotive computing devices," said Craig Mundie, senior vice president of the consumer platforms division at Microsoft. The device, the size of a car stereo system, can be easily installed in the dashboard, providing drivers access to personal information and driving directions as well as wireless services such as e-mail, paging and traffic alerts, a digital audio system, an AM/FM radio and a CD player. PC Companion devices are designed to work together, so users can share information between their Auto PC and a Handheld PC or Palm PC. The first worldwide wave of automobile manufacturers and suppliers, as well as aftermarket electronics vendors, supporting the Auto PC platform includes Alpine Japan, Clarion Corp. of America, Daewoo Telecom Ltd., Hyundai Electronics Industries Company Ltd., IAV GmbH, Infinity Systems Inc., JBL Inc., Magneti Marelli S.p.A., MD-Co., Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A., PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN, Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., United Technologies Automotive Inc., Avio Corp. and Volkswagen AG. Master of "bundling", Microsoft will soon offer its navigation system with an in-car computer interface dubbed TBox, which will support a dedicated operating system called Windows Automotive. Currently version 4.2 has been introduced, and has gone out to sub-developers to build supporting software that is compatible. According to Microsofts Windows Automotive website, "Microsoft will soon offer its navigation system with an in-car computer interface dubbed TBox. The release of Windows Automotive version 4.2 marks the introduction of the first Microsoft .NET-connected, voice-enabled software for building next-generation in-vehicle devices. Windows Automotive 4.2, built on the Windows CE operating system, is the first Microsoft telematics software platform to include the .NET Compact Framework. This technology will enable the industry to give drivers and passengers seamless access to a wide range of Web services as well as smooth functionality among all Windows powered devices.
