What Is The Factory Warranty On My Car

Get The Best Deal On A Used Car By Using Your Computer

I got a phenomenal deal on the exact car I wanted, with the features most important to me, and in my favorite color! This is the fourth time I've bought a car this way so I'm sharing my method.

I've described step-by-step how I do it and then outlined the steps for you to follow.

  1. I first determined what type car would meet my needs: a 4 door sedan.
  2. I set my price limit at $13, 000 for the car (excluding tax, title and license).
  3. I wanted some factory warranty remaining so I narrowed the year to 2007 since most warranties are 3 years or 36, 000 miles.
  4. I wanted leather seats that provided cushioned comfortable riding as we often travel 400-600 miles in a day.
  5. I wanted reasonable mpg. Anything from 20-30 mpg would be okay.

No new cars met my criteria so I began searching used cars. Then the process of elimination began. 2007 Hondas and Toyotas were out of my price range. I looked at two Hyundai models but decided against them for various reasons. My neighbor swears by her 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis LS so I drove hers, which have very comfortable leather seats, and promptly decided to search for a 2007 Grand Marquis LS. Currant year cars had been out for months so finding a nearby 2007 White Mercury Grand Marquis LS with low mileage and leather seats was challenging. I looked almost every day for three months and finally found one for $12, 400. The factory warranty is good through 4/10. It gets 29 mpg over the road and has big comfy leather seats! Read on to learn the website that will make it possible for you to find your perfect car but . . .

Make Your Decisions First

Decide what car meets your needs: This is the FIRST decision you should make. Think about what's important to you. Is it price, space, features, model, year? List points by priority to keep yourself focused. The terrific part about this approach is you can change your mind easily without leaving home or feeling any pressure.

Other Criteria Besides Appearance, Comfort and Price are:

Do you want some remaining factory warranty?

What features are "must haves"?

Determine how the car will be checked out: Your mechanic, Certified Pre-Owned or CarMax type dealership?

Here's How to Begin

Go to the website www.cars.com. This website gives you remarkable control over your search.

First decide if you are looking for new, used or certified pre-owned. Put in information such as make, model, distance from your zip code (how far you are willing to travel to see/get the car) and your zip code. Skip the part on price and leave it at No Max. I'll explain later.

Once you bring up the pages of make and model you are going to see something like:

Results: 16 Vehicles within 100 Miles of 76205

In tiny letters above the word "Results" are the words "Modify Search". Click on them.

Skip the boxes about price range and go to the boxes about year range. If you want to see only cars of a particular year you must enter that year twice. For example, I wanted a 2007 so I put 2007 to 2007 in year range which ruled out all other years.

Skip the next two boxes about distance and listings and click on "Modify Search" located at the end of the boxes.

Next Comes the Most Helpful Part

Once you see the car choices you can go to "Sort By" on the top right hand side of the page. It shows the "Highest" price first but you can toggle all manner of sorting.

To keep within my budget I went to "Lowest" price first so I could see if my choice vehicle had come available. The mileage on each car is right beside the price. It took moments to find out if a low mileage 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis under $13, 000 had come available. One did but was a thousand miles across the country.
